Yes, it's finally here - National Novel Month! Can you write a novel in a month? I know I'm not up for it... but my husband, Scott Lommers is! Check out his progress and find out more about this national novel writing event at thetwoRs!

Cat in the Studio!

When your studio is your house, it's hard to keep the cat away from my painting table - espcially the new little kitten of the household, Luna Lovegood (yes, my family loves Harry Potter). I have paintings everywhere, trying to get ready to hang a show next week. They are in various stages of readiness... some still need a little more paint, some need the canvas sides painted, some need framing, some need hardware, some are NOT for the show and are just waiting to be packed and shipped to a customer! With 2 kids, 2 cats, 1 dog, and 1 hamster it's getting a little crowded. (That studio space I'm looking to get next summer can't come soon enough!) AND... the new kitten is in crazed kitten mode racing through the house chasing imagined mice, chasing her tail, and darn near running through wet paint! She almost clawed her way up a painting! Arghhhh. OK, time to get locked in the bedroom for a little quiet time! Isn't she cute, though?

In All Things We Find Ourselves...

I'm working on this large painting for my upcoming show at Allied Arts in Bellingham, WA, when it just struck me. "In All Things..." There I am in the middle of the painting. I'm the red bird. I'm the one hiding in the grass. I'm the one trying to camoflauge myself with red flowers. I'm the circles, the flowers, the lillies, the stones. This piece is all parts of me struggling together to find a whole person where all the pieces of my life can work as one. Maybe it's the Buddhist book I was reading a few weeks ago... I don't know. What I do know is that I suddenly felt this huge connection to my painting and I was at peace.

If you are near the Northwest in November, please check out my show at Allied Arts with another local awesome artist, Ben Mann. His work is fun, bright, and bold. It's going to be a great show. This painting I finished tonight (detail is pictured) will no doubt be my highlight. I hope you can come see it.

Sumi Brush Drawings

I finally did it. I cleaned out my art desk. Wow, where does the time go. I found all kinds of drawings from years ago when I was learning the art of the Sumi Brush. I believe it was the reason I was never attracted to watercolor. There's a finality with every brush stroke that you don't get with Acrylics or Oils. And yet, it's important to stay loose and not constrict your movements so that the brush can make those beautiful organic lines and shapes that gives this art form it's immense beauty. Look for these drawings to start appearing on etsy as prints - I hope you enjoy!

A Good Problem...

So I was thinking how much I'm going to be scrambling to get ready for all my upcoming shows and events and then what do you know... I get the call. "We chose your work to hang at our venue... Can you hang 5-7 paintings today?" Being that I was in the middle of ballet class for my daughter (5), in my grubby jeans, hair in ponytails, and wearing my old orange volleyball shirt, I wasn't feeling my most professional as I stopped by the venue on my way home to see what the space looked like. Fortunately they agreed to letting me hang my work on Friday. Whew! After looking at the mix of paintings I have ready to go, I've decided to paint three more paintings tomorrow, frame them, and add them to the collection. Like my title says... it's a GOOD problem to have! Look for this painting "Bird Call" soon to come to the Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, WA - Friday until December 31.

Allied Arts November Show - Bellingham, WA

I'm in the thick of things... in the thick of paint, actually... getting ready for my Allied Arts Gallery show in November with fellow Northwest artist Ben Mann. I brought out my first big canvas to prepare and have started to lay down the ground work. So far I'm pretty excited! Unfortunately, the only place I can accomodate painting my larger pieces (4 ft x 4 ft) is propped up on the dining room table. I think dinner will be in the living room for the next few weeks!

9 Hours Later

Ugh. If it wasn't for the 3 hour wait in Salem due to a wreck, and the heavy rain, driving in the dark, and the long weekend sitting at a rainy, windy show precipitating the drive, I'm SURE the 9 hour drive home would have been quite fun! It was my first year attending the Lincoln City Plein Air Festival in Oregon this year, and wow, was it a doosey. I hear the weather was great last year. I have NO idea how I actually made a little money at the show. I was grateful to a wonderful group of hearty artists who stuck out the weather and helped me take down my set-up before the wind blew me away. I was also VERY glad to have my mother-in-law accompany me on this trip! I'm sure half my inventory would be very soggy if it wasn't for her help too! At least those long 9 hours gave me a chance to count all my blessings...
