A Grey Kind of Day - Paint Mixing 101

I know this is odd advice coming from me - the vivid and colorful painter that I am - but grey is a great color to offset those vivid reds, blues, and yellows! But how, HOW, you may ask, do you get a good grey? Black and White? Boring!

The color wheel is not only a great place to learn how to make colors POP (placing compliments such as red next to green, for example), but it is also a great place to learn how to mix a great grey color! Try to mix your red and green together, or blue and orange, yellow and purple... see what great and varied grey colors you can get! Of course, you can always go with the tried and true... SLUDGE. That's what a messy painter's paint palette (that's me!) turns into after a long paint session - ALSO a great grey!

Have too much grey? Use it as your base coat for your next work of art - as shown on my latest painting here!

Happy Painting!

Painting a Day... on the weekend? Well, um, not so much

Thank you to my wonderful followers who have been faithfully bidding away on my "Painting a Day" holiday promotion! Your support is overwhelming, and much appreciated.

Now, for the bad news... I can't keep up! For the remainder of the promotion, I will not be listing paintings on Saturday or Sunday or Thanksgiving Day. Sorry! You can find me THIS Sunday, however, selling my paintings in Eugene at a great little show:

PINK! Not the usual suspect...

I LOVE warm colors. Yellow is my best friend. I should have known this all along... when other girls my age had pink bedrooms, I had yellow. Somehow this trait did not pass from mother to daughter (although my love of art, gardens, and animals did - phew!) My daughter LOVES pink (and purple, to some extent). She IS Fancy Nancy (if you have a young daughter, you probably know what I mean - if not, check it out the next time you're at the library). My daughter liked to teach the rest of her family (myself included) HOW to be fancy. Somehow, I'm still a yellow girl. HOWEVER, much to my daughter's delight, I did happen to create this new floral painting with a soft pink glow. I think it's the roses I have recently acquired. I've never been a rose person either, but here I am with about 20 rose bushes. Somehow, they just made me think... delicate pink.

I hope you enjoy my latest "Painting a Day" painting... for a limited time - now available on EBAY.

The Late Great Art Sale continues...

Late but not forgotten - my latest little painting, "Memories of a Spring Day" is now for sale on EBAY as a part of my continuing "Painting a Day for 30 days" series. This latest little painting was inspired (and delayed) by our VERY recent and continuing move into a much anticipated new home. As we move, I am reminded of our last hometown in the Skagit Valley of Northwest Washington, and the beautiful farmlands and tulip fields that surround the area. Our new home has some characteristics of our last house, and as we began our moving plans (picking out paint colors, washer/dryer, planning murals in the kid rooms, scheduling carpet cleaning, and many more mundane tasks) I thought it fitting that my painting today should be from these memories. I only had time for a little painting, but I hope you enjoy the rich layers of texture and the abstracted floral images. And hopefully, as we settle in, I'll get back on schedule with my "Painting a Day" each day and share some of my favorite images from our current, and now rather permanent hometown in the Willamette Valley of Oregon.

Screen Printing 101 Continued...

"Tangerine Birds"
Available on ETSY
$35.00

As I've mentioned before, I haven't screen printed since shortly after college (aka "awhile ago"). After playing with image transfer techniques, and enjoying their effect, it made me realize that I might be able to go even further with my repeated bird images by using the screen printing technique as well.

My first attempt at creating my image for printing failed (using sun to expose the screen may not have been my best choice). My second attempt has worked out much better! It took me several tries pulling the ink and using different materials and paper in order to get a somewhat clean image, but I finally finished one and it is definitely PROGRESS! I actually liked the uneven quality of the lime green feathers and the newspaper print kind of texture with the black outlines. However, I think overall I will actually prefer the cleaner lines of the photo emulsion, and will give that another try using a bulb instead of the sun. I may end up using a mix of the 2 techniques down the road, but we'll see. The saga continues...

For now, my new little birdie pair is available online at my NEW Etsy printshop: www.Studio262.etsy.com
